If an HR intranet is to become established as a key communication tool, it is vital that navigation around the site is intuitive and that the language used is easy to follow. Moreover, to open up the potential benefits of an HR intranet to all employees, a company must provide universal access to PCs and may also have to consider offering training to certain staff. Drawing on the experience of the six featured case study companies, this new IDS HR Study offers valuable tips on how to design an effective HR intranet and looks at how some companies are providing secure remote access via the Internet.

These enable employees and managers to carry out, or at least initiate, basic HR transactions online and thereby relieve the administrative pressure on HR. The IDS Study looks in detail at the range of HR processes that are being moved online and the levels of functionality that are incorporated into self-service tools. !Df+r `}F.X

jSTg-C E The Study also considers the impact of self-service on working culture. While self-service offers a means of empowering staff by giving them greater control over their personal data, it is also an environment in which employee and managers are expected to take on greater responsibility. For this reason, winning support for e-HR is critical.
