As I have interviewed many candidates over the years from entry level to executive management, there are several that stand out in my mind as amusing or “I can’t believe they did that in an interview” stories.

For several years, I have thought that other recruiters come in to contact with some of the same situations I have and how interesting it would be to share these amusing candidate stories with others in the profession. These stories can be of actual live interviews, phone screens or video conferences.

In our chosen profession of recruitment, we have also encountered many situations where interviewing candidates has left us with … a moment of amusement … and/or pondering what just happened here … to that was a wonderful person who deserves a break and a great opportunity.xt;R7o+T

I’m looking for non-fiction (TRUE) stories of interview situations or encounters. These stories can be of amusing nature; an embarrassing moment/situation or of a candidate that made an impression or affect on you in some positive way. Situations should be of real life situations that you have experienced. Length of story should be between 300 -1500 words approximately.

Here is an example of a situation that I encountered several years ago when I was staffing for a call center representative. As we know in recruiting we do have to accommodate our candidates at times especially if they are currently employed. This particular interview was scheduled for a candidate during lunch so she would not miss work. As we proceed through the interview, the candidate opens up her purse and begins to pull out a sandwich and a drink. Yes, she did – she began to eat her lunch during our interview. As I was in the midst of discussing the organization, this young lady neatly spread her lunch over the edge of the desk and placed a napkin on her lap and one on top of the desk. I came to a stopping point and had asked her a question regarding a particular skill set on her resume. As I wait for her to chew, swallow and then take a drink, she then proceeds to answer the question. Now many would have stopped the interview at that point and/or probably have asked her to interview at another time when convenient or not bring her back to interview at all. I could tell not only by the demeanor but also by her answers that she was not going to be qualified for what we were looking for in a customer service representative. I had cut the interview shorter than normal. She proceeded to pack the rest of her lunch up and placed it in her purse. I stand up and began to thank her for her time and start walking towards the door and then walked her to the lobby. Needless to say it was an interesting encounter and not one I have encountered since.6X(snEL
