Getting the Coach to Work

According to this year's CIPD research 4 out of 5 companies are now using coaching to improve performance. This week I found out, first hand, what business coaching is all about.

My coach was Karen Skehel of Walk on Waves Coaching. She describes herself as a "holistic executive coach" and has done slots on morning TV as well as writing for Natural Health Magazine answering readers personal and professional dilemmas. ;|-y C8m"~mJb

In preparation for our session Karen sent me a couple of documents to complete which would give her an idea of the areas in my life I wanted to address and what I felt my key challenges were. A Coaching programme normally lasts 12 sessions. During the first session the coach and client create inspiring business and personal goals and then subsequent sessions deal with strategy and then project manage the achievement of the goals. Despite just having a "taster" session with Karen she was keen that we identify my most important goal and agree some measurables by which I would know when the goal was achieved. My goal felt like a personal "mission statement" and I really enjoyed the process of defining it. "M(\.UwmDU

Karen has developed a specific interest in the recruitment market. Whilst she has worked with a number of recruiters as clients, she is currently focusing on strategic partnerships with Executive Recruiters. Basically executive coaching would become another service offered alongside their existing services. Newly placed senior candidates benefit from coaching to help them transition quickly into their new roles . The plan is that this would offer a unique selling point to the senior executive recruiter as well as helping to ensure candidate retention.
