Recruiting update from around the nation
Prospects, especially in non-metropolitan areas, run in cycles. Back in 2002 during the heyday of Raleigh hoops, the likes of Shavlik Randolph, Eric Williams, Anthony Richardson and P.J. Tucker ran the town.

With each team seeking its first win, Leslie and Co. raced out to what appeared to be an insurmountable lead. However, in a breakneck-paced fourth quarter, Ross and his crew made a miraculous comeback after trailing by as many as 24 points. When it was over, Ross had 33 points and nine boards while Leslie fouled out with 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Mater Dei is poised for another big time season. On Monday night Taylor King dumped in 28 points, including a trio of three-pointers in first minute and a half of the game while Oregon-bound guard Kamyron Brown had 15 assists. King should become the school's all-time scoring leader early in the season as he began his senior campaign with 2,229 points — about 200 behind the school record. m8~M$X^(xTl*i/XPK

Artesia opened its season with its best players bringing the noise. Guard Malik Story led the 74-29 rout of Brentwood with a team-high 24 while 2009's top dog Renardo Sidney had 16 points. To the best of our knowledge, this was Sidney's debut as a high school basketball player. He did not play last season in Mississippi when a transfer rule kept him out of action.

It is early in the recruiting process to start making conclusions about players in the 2009 class. But when the opinion of coach Jim Hart is a positive one regarding any prospect, one must make sure to keep updating the status of Jordan Stevens, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound shooting guard from Saratoga Springs High School in Saratoga, N.Y.

Many consider this part of New York as good horse country. But due to the strength of the Albany City Rocks program, players like Stevens will receive plenty of exposure. From the 2009 class, Stevens has impressed Hart and opponents with two aspects: his great stroke and athletic ability.!vV9m|[]gzcE

Hart has also pointed out that Stevens understands the game of basketball and will make changes during the game that help his team win. Siena, Marist, Seton Hall, Syracuse and Georgia Tech are among the schools that have expressed some interest. It's early but not too early to keep an eye on his game this season.1x*q1o}2TW E

Every successful basketball program needs a solid floor general to direct the offense. And when a basketball program consistently has success, then it's not surprising that the position has been solid for a long time.

Such is the case for the St. Mary's basketball program. Coach Robert Jones needs to have a big season out of point guard Scott Machado. The 6-foot-1 lead guard will have to be ready on both ends of the court for Jones this season for the Gaels to have a big year.

Many that have watched Machado think one of his biggest strengths is, well, his strength. Jones feels Machado's strong frame allows him to get to the rim, causing massive problems for defenders inside the paint.

The schedule for St. Mary's features either scrimmages or games against Rice, Christ The King, Bishop Loughlin, and St. Dominic's twice. So steady play from the point guard position will have a big impact on the wins and losses this season. "He has interest from Yale, Rutgers, George Mason, Davidson, Clemson, and Stony Brook," said Jones. "He's open."

Tony Gwynn is a name many sports fans are familiar with due to his outstanding play on a baseball field. But Gwynn is now making a name for himself by recruiting athletes, some whom are pretty good basketball players, to play baseball at San Diego State.

Gwynn has made some noise by coming to the East Coast and picking up a player from a traditionally rich basketball program on Long Island. St. Dominic's High School has always fielded a solid basketball program under head coach Rob Pavinelli. He has several players on his roster this season that are likely to play Division One basketball over the next few years.

He also has a pretty good athlete in T.J. Thomas. According to Pavinelli, Thomas has decided to accept a baseball scholarship at San Diego State. Gwynn offered the free ride to Thomas.

"He has been a two-time All Long Island basketball player here at St. Dom's," Pavinelli said. "He is such a gifted athlete and fierce competitor, that he could have been a Division One player in basketball." Instead, Thomas will try to learn under one of the game's great hitters in Gwynn.Zj1y k(l

UCLA picked up a big commitment recently when Malcolm Lee gave a verbal to Ben Howland and the Bruins. Lee, a 6-4 junior guard from Riverside North High in Riverside, Calif., may play the one- or the two-guard in college. He's got ball skills and feel to play point guard, but he's grown since the summer and he may grow out of the position if he gets much bigger. Lee is the second elite junior guard to commit to UCLA, joining Jerime Anderson, a 6-1 point guard from Canyon High in Anaheim, Calif.L B:d _F)_k&D
