Background
The employer is a business journal produced by a global consulting firm.
The journal is launching a Simplified Chinese version for PRC. The website will provide access to an archive of the journal articles in Functional and Industry topic areas. Additionally, new articles will be added to the site on a weekly basis. The site will be similar in layout and functionality to its English site.
Position
The Journal is seeking an assistant managing editor who will help the Senior Editor/Managing Editor to maintain and continually refresh the site with current and archival content that is of interest to the PRC audience and to manage all e-mail communications to site members. This will be an important position, charged with ensuring that its Chinese site presents users with relevant content that has been effectively translated. This position reports to the Editor/Managing Editor in charge of the Chinese language website. This position is based in Shanghai.
Responsibilities
Content translations
- Work with the translation vendors to ensure that all content is translated from English to Simplified Chinese in a way that conforms to the Journal’s style guide
- proofread all content translated by the vendor (article abstracts, full text articles, and exhibits) using an exchange of Microsoft Word documents and an online interface hosted by the vendor
- In cases where translations are not optimal, work with the China-based vendor project manager to correct any issues
- Identify ways to continuously improve the translations – via automated tools (ex. Expanding the glossary) and via work processes (ex. Make alterations to the translation process to improve efficiency)
- Ensure that all illustrations presented with articles are culturally appropriate and resolve any issues
- Work with the in-house exhibit production department in Shanghai to make any final edits needed to exhibits once they have been produced by the translation vendor
Website Presentation
- Proof and finalize the presentation of all articles for sign-off by the Editor prior to publication on the website
- In collaboration with the Editor and by using a CMS interface, design the layout of the home page and Functional and Industry pages to effectively highlight content for our audience
- Using a point and click tool, create website “Modules” that group content together in ways that help the audience to effectively explore business issues
Monthly Newsletter
- Work with the Editor to identify appropriate content for a monthly e-mail newsletter to be mailed to site users
- Traffic newsletter copy from draft stage through final e-mail stage. This includes working with the senior editor, a copyeditor, and the technical resource charged with setting up the mailings.
- Be responsible for final proofing and mailing of the newsletter
- Evaluate email effectiveness and make suggestions to optimize future newsletters to best meet audience needs
- Establish scalable processes to allow for additional, more frequent mailings in the future.
Reporting
- Create reports using a web analytics tool to understand which articles are of greatest interest to the website audience. Use this information to optimize the articles presented on the site (ex. Home page, modules)
Customer Service
- Respond to user inquiries via e-mail to resolve technical issues and general site queries, working with tech or editorial resources as needed.
Print book
- Provide the Journal’s print publication committee with all materials (articles and exhibits) needed for each print edition of the Journal, in the appropriate format. This will require insuring that the articles are translated by the translation vendor on a timely basis (one version for both web and print) and that appropriate formats are created by the production assistant. Once all materials have been gathered , send to committee on a timely basis.
General
-Along with the senior editor, coordinate activities and mailings with US counterparts as needed.
-Coordinate with the production resources of the Chinese print Journal as needed.
-Work with senior editor and tech resource on ongoing, miscellaneous site maintenance activities
Key Skills
- Written and spoken fluency of English and Chinese
- Knowledge of the Internet
- 2 year experience in Chinese language web publishing
- Familiarity with and high comfort level using online publishing tools such as content management systems
- Familiarity with translation process and 2 year experience in translation (English into Chinese)
- Proficiency with Word, Excel
- Ability to manage processes and drive multiple tasks forward; keen attention to detail
- Willing to learn and work as a great team player.
