CareerBuilder v. Monster v. Google
Thinking of using CareerBuilder or Monster for your next recruiting activity. Since Careerbuilder is a partner with Tribune Newspapers, it’s likely that your local newspaper uses Careerbuilder as their online job posting service. So, if someone wants to look in the local newspaper for a job, and then goes online to that newspaper website, they will see your Careerbuilder ad.

It really does depend on the type of job that you are advertising. Some people have had better experience using CareerBuilder for their sales related and medical positions. Other people say that Monster is great for entry level positions. While still others say that Craigslist is best suited for those that are unemployed. With that said, Monster and CareerBuilder allow you to use any of their screening tools to process applicants. Craigslist is a no-frills classified site. CareerBuilder and Monster each have the option for employers to have the candidates answer questions that could screen them in, or out, of the selection process. If you don’t use them, you could be inundated with hundreds of unqualified applicants.

CareerBuilder has been great for high volume ad response within just a few days posting. If you are looking for resume search capability Monster is the way to go. The new thing that CB has done recently is they have taken away the ability to refresh job orders, meaning your job order you post becomes virtually useless around the 2nd week, despite your 30 days. They took the functionality away with no notice to the customer.6 L8 Y( D' W& u+ M/ S+ R

The trend in recruiting is towards vertical search (i.e. using the technology of Google). Using Google allows you to get your jobs in front of the passive job seeker. This leads to a more targeted and better quality candidate if they choose to submit their resume. The passive job seeker is the one that is currently and happily employed, but can be persuaded to a better opportunity if one comes along. This type of person tends to be your diamond in the rough.: Z0 |7 t; R; k+ \1 p# g; Q8 a

For example, if you are in Chicago, you may find that you can get better qualified candidates using Google rather than Monster or CareerBuilder . Some people will not even post to Monster anymore because they have been with unqualified applicants and people were calling about the job months after the job posting came down.

The trend in recruiting is towards vertical search and away from careerbuilder and monster. Google Base, the online classified equivalent to Craigslist, allows you to post jobs for free and made searchable via Google. If you have an Adwords account you can have the opportunity to create a Google Base pay-per-click campaign so that you can get your jobs right in front of potential job seekers.
